The popular local journalist who will be well known to many of you as the former Churches correspondent at the Ballymena Times has joined up with us and we are delighted to have him on-board. With 20 years of experience writing stories, reporting on church mission and outreach work, church community events and much more for many churches in the Ballymena area, Joe intends to carry on where he left off by continuing to write and report on The Church Page. As the internet grows and more people look on-line for information, The Church Page through the blog and social media gives churches a platform to let lots of people know about their event, special services, missionary work etc etc. So if you’re planning something in your church which you want to promote to others then Joe will be delighted to hear from you. The Church Page welcomes Joe Boyd on-board and even though many of you will know him as the church’s correspondent, in fact some of you reading this may well have been in contact regularly with him, we asked Joe to write us a short bio and let us know something of what makes Joe tick!
‘Joe turns over a new leaf with ‘The Church Page’
“I will already be well-known to many of you as the former Churches Correspondent at the Ballymena & Antrim Times.
I spent 20 very happy years there and was blessed to speak to a range of notable figures, including former World Boxing Champion, Nigel Benn, record-breaking triple-jumper, Jonathan Edwards and even Prime Minister, David Cameron.
Writing for the Ballymena & Antrim Times could only be loosely described as ‘work’! One could not fail to learn from renowned journalists like Billy Spence, Karen Fullerton and Stephen Alexander. Dessie Blackadder is without doubt one of the province’s premier weekly newspaper Editors. Having the opportunity to write such a substantial Christian section in a secular newspaper also gave me a wonderful outlet for serving God. I was blessed to receive letters from people who were touched in a positive way by what we wrote.
I grew up in Kells and gave my life to Christ at the age of six. This theological ‘education’ took place at the village’s Presbyterian Church. Over the years, I have been involved with various local charities including the Hope Centre, Reaching & Teaching Ministries and the Friday Night Club for young people who have physical disabilities. Living out my faith in the wider community is important for me as it should be for every Christian, regardless of what they do.
Joining the team at www.thechurchpage.com is one way in which I can continue to do this. It is an innovative and exciting project which has the potential to show the Christian heart of our town to a global on-line audience. I feel privileged to be a part of this cutting edge initiative with Christ at its core.
Outside work I’m a regular at the gym and I love going to concerts and listening to music from all genres. I’m a founding member of the Spark outreach, you’ll see me handing out CDs and sweets at Broadway bandstand every summer and in the run up to Christmas.
My proudest moment was when I married my ‘true love, best friend and soulmate’, Rachael, in October 2014. We now live on the outskirts of Ballymena and enjoy worshipping God together at Victory Praise Community Church.”
