A Celebration of God’s Kitchen – Book Launch

A new book entitled ‘A Celebration of God’s Kitchen’ has been launched to mark 30 years of Kells & Connor Luncheon Club. The club takes place every Thursday at Kells Presbyterian Church, Ballymena. (except June and July)

The 80-page bound volume has been compiled by local journalist, Joe Boyd. In it he looks back at the history of the Club, in addition to poems, articles and photographs. These have all been contributed by the Senior Citizens themselves.

The Kells & Connor Luncheon Club began on 1st October 1987. It was founded by Social Services representative, Frank McArdle and Rev Stafford Carson, who was then Minister of Kells & Eskylane Presbyterian Churches.

Both men saw the importance of providing a regular hot meal for isolated older people in addition to opportunities for social interaction.

Since then, the Club has continued to go from strength to strength and currently boasts around thirty members.
Compiling the anniversary book has been a ‘labour of love’ for Joe. His mum, Margaret was the original Head Cook and is still one of the helpers.
Joe said:

“Preparing this book would not have been possible without the help of many people. Not least, the members and helpers of the Luncheon Club past and present. I am indebted to the group’s current chairman, Robin Fowler. He gave me access to the club’s archives and committee meeting minutes stretching over 30 years. Robin has also been instrumental in the gathering of most of the member contributions. I also thank Michelle McCabe, who’s layout and cover design on the book is simply out out of this world. Of course, I have to thank mum for putting the idea into my head.”

Current Club Chairman, Mr Robin Fowler, added:

“I am humbled to follow in the footsteps of some well-known and respected people who have led the Club from the start.  People like William (Billy) Hanna, who was the Club’s first Chairman, William Harkness and Jim Beattie to mention a few.

“I feel honoured and privileged to hold such a position, working along with others who are dedicated in what they do.  I hope and trust that the Luncheon Club will continue to grow in the years ahead and remain for years to come.”
